Fishing down the Mediterranean Food

چکیده

These impacts of fisheries have led, in the late 1990s, to a growing interest in "ecosystembased management" (see e.g. NRC, 1999). Moreover, though the full implications of such form of management continue to remain elusive, there is a growing understanding that ecosystembased management must consider and maintain the structuring role of large predators in marine food webs. The demonstration by Pauly et al. (1998a) that the mean trophic level of fisheries landings has been declining in most parts of the world thus confirmed the widespread view that most of the world. fisheries are not sustainable in that they increasingly rely on organisms with low trophic levels, such as small fishes and invertebrates, Le., on the prey species of larger fishes and marine mammals.

The possibility of occurrence of the phenomenon “fishing down marine food webs” in the coastal waters of Hormozgan Province (north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea)

We examined the temporal trend in mean trophic level (mTL), trophic category landing (TrC) and landing profile (LP) of the exploited marine community (49 species) in the fishing zone of Hormozgan (north of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea) from 2001 to 2011. LP had an increasing trend (r = 0.88, P<0.001), whereas, mTL of the landings showed a significant decrease from 2001 to 2011 (r = -0.69, P<0.05)....

Ecosystem assessment of the North-Central Adriatic Sea: towards a multivariate reference framework

We analyzed data from catch statistics, scientific surveys and results from ecosystem models to assess main changes in marine resources of the North-Central Adriatic Sea (Central Mediterranean) from the mid 1970s to the early 2000s. We then quantified food-web changes using these datasets and trophodynamic indicators. We applied time series trends and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to red...

Farming up Mediterranean food webs.

One of the effects of fisheries on ecosystems is that they tend to remove the larger, higher-trophic-level species and thus progressively lower the mean trophic level (TL) of the landings. This effect is known as “fishing down the food web” (Pauly et al. 1998; but see also Essington et al. [2006] for addition of low-TL fisheries instead of decline in high-TL fisheries, termed “fishing through m...

Historical changes of the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem: modelling the role and impact of primary productivity and fisheries changes over time

The Mediterranean Sea has been defined "under siege" because of intense pressures from multiple human activities; yet there is still insufficient information on the cumulative impact of these stressors on the ecosystem and its resources. We evaluate how the historical (1950-2011) trends of various ecosystems groups/species have been impacted by changes in primary productivity (PP) combined with...

Fishing through marine food webs.

A recurring pattern of declining mean trophic level of fisheries landings, termed "fishing down the food web," is thought to be indicative of the serial replacement of high-trophic-level fisheries with less valuable, low-trophic-level fisheries as the former become depleted to economic extinction. An alternative to this view, that declining mean trophic levels indicate the serial addition of lo...
